About The Savannah

A Savannah cat is a cross between a domestic cat and an African Serval (see the comparison image at the bottom of this page). The Savannah cat is known for its equilateral triangular shaped head, large ears, tall slender build and Serval like spots. It is one of the newest breeds of hybrid cats and is highly sought after. The breeding of the domestic cat to an African Serval is a complicated and time consuming task that has only been achieved by a few breeders worldwide.
When looking at web sites related to this intriguing large breed of cat you may come across some of the following abbreviations: SBT, F1, F2, F3, etc. Here is a very basic explanation of these terms. The 'F' in F1, stands for filial. The number following refers to the generations removed from its wild ancestor the African Serval. For example:
F1 = 53% Serval and 1st generation removed from its Serval ancestor
F2 = 29% Serval and is 2nd generation removed
F3 = 16% Serval and is 3rd generation removed and so on...
The Earliest generation to be avaliable here in Australia is the F5 and this is due to Australias tough laws regarding importing of felines. Some breeders are finding that the kittens produced by 5th generation Savannahs are lacking in the high standard of markings, facial features and body structure unique to the breed. However, Savannah Cats Down Under uses only the highest quality bloodlines from the original founders of the Savannah breed to unsure that the kittens produced are of the highest quality and standards.
The temperament of a Savannah cat is more dog like than cat like and they love to be with their owners. Savannah cats can be taught to fetch and even enjoy walking on a leash. They are highly intelligent, assertive, energetic and very inquisitive. The natural playfulness means they get along well with children and other pets. Unlike most cats, Savannah cats love water and will often play or even submerge themselves.
The Savannah is the newest most rare and highly sought after hybrid cat to reach the shores of Australia. Whilst they could be considered to be highly priced in relation to other domestic cats, the truth is that Savannahs are very unique and cannot be compared with that of another breed of cat. Their dramatic markings and unique personalities make them the ultimate family member or companion for the person looking for something a little more exclusive.
